Our School

River Tees Hospital School, a unique alternative special school dedicated to serving pupils who face a range of educational barriers due to complex physical and mental health challenges.

Our child-centred approach is at the heart of our mission. We offer a holistic, bespoke curriculum tailored to the diverse challenges and complex needs of our pupils. By delivering personalised support and wraparound care, we strive to remove barriers to learning, guiding pupils on their journey back to mainstream education or specialised pathways.

At River Tees Hospital School, we believe in a holistic and relational approach to behaviour, ensuring that every learner can engage successfully and rediscover their love of learning while on the road to recovery. Our curriculum is broad and balanced, focusing on three key themes.

By emphasising these themes, we aim to support our pupils in achieving successful progression towards adulthood, including the skills and qualifications necessary for future employment. Together, we are dedicated to fostering resilience, hope, and aspiration in every pupil, ensuring they are well-prepared for the next stage of their educational journey and beyond.

Each pupil benefits from a bespoke timetable that includes both core and foundation subjects, ensuring a comprehensive educational experience.

In addition to our ambitious curriculum, we offer specialised programmes such as The Kings Trust and a virtual curriculum, tailored to meet the unique needs of our pupils. Our timetables are meticulously designed to accommodate individual learning requirements, fostering both academic and personal growth.

By prioritising a personalised approach, we aim to support each pupil in achieving their educational goals while addressing their specific medical and emotional needs.

Community Learning

Our school offers home tuition for primary and secondary pupils who are unable to attend their own school due to medical reasons. We strive to deliver educational support that aligns closely with the courses and subjects the pupils would be covering at their home school.

Our approach is tailored to focus on the individual abilities and additional needs of each pupil, ensuring that our educational offerings are appropriate across a wide range of ages and learning requirements. By providing personalised instruction, we aim to help pupils maintain their academic progress and facilitate a smooth transition back to their regular schooling when they are ready.

James Cook University Hospital

At James Cook University Hospital, we provide education to all school-age children during their inpatient stay. Our approach is collaborative, working closely with families, home schools, and medical staff to ensure a seamless educational experience.

Education is delivered directly on the children’s wards (21 & 22), utilising cubicles, bedside teaching and our teaching hub. Our dedicated staff bring a variety of resources such as iPads, laptops and other teaching materials to each student, ensuring that learning continues in a comfortable and supportive environment.

Whenever possible, we align our teaching with the curriculum provided by the child’s home school. This approach helps to minimise the impact of their absence and supports a smoother transition back to their regular educational setting.
