The Relational Behaviour Approach is a behaviour change model implemented across the Trust, integrating the principles of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) from an Attachment Aware, Trauma-Informed (AATI) perspective. This model empowers staff with strategies to help pupils develop the tools needed to regulate their emotions and make positive choices. The primary goal of PBS is to prevent and reduce dysregulated behaviour while enhancing the quality of life for all pupils.
When behaviour is perceived as challenging, it often signals unmet needs. At River Tees Hospital School, we actively listen to our pupils to understand the underlying messages behind their behaviour. We identify four key functions of behaviour:
- Escape – Avoiding an activity or person
- Attention – Seeking additional attention
- Tangible Gain – Obtaining an item or activity
- Sensory Needs – Addressing discomfort or seeking pleasure
