At River Tees Hospital School, we are committed to delivering a comprehensive curriculum through community-based learning. Our goal is to ensure that every pupil has access to a curriculum that aligns with our in-school offerings, even while they are receiving care. We utilise a variety of platforms and home learning packs to facilitate this, ensuring that our pupils continue their educational journey seamlessly.
‘I just wanted to express my thanks for the excellent support my son is receiving with his home learning. He always finishes his lessons happy and so proud of what he has achieved. This is down to the encouragement and positivity of the community teachers’ – Year 8 Parent
Curriculum
Within our community offer, the curriculum coverage is tailored to meet the unique needs of each pupil. We collaborate closely with medical professionals to determine the most effective approach to education based on individual circumstances. This personalised strategy ensures that all educational activities are appropriate and supportive of each pupil’s health and wellbeing.
‘My son has improved immensely since joining community learning from Hospital School. As a family we have noticed an improvement in his academic ability and with his mental health. The team are always here to help’ – Year 9 Parent.
How Do We Teach It?
The methods we employ for teaching are flexible and adapted to the specific needs of our pupils. We may utilise one or more of the following approaches for pupils accessing our community pathway:
- Home Tuition: Personalised quality first teaching in the comfort of the pupil’s home.
- Public Venues: Engaging learning experiences at community hubs and libraries.
- AV1 Robot: Innovative technology that allows for remote participation in lessons whilst at home or in hospital.
- Teams/Zoom: Virtual classrooms that facilitate real-time interaction with subject specialists.
- Telephone Teaching: Direct communication for personalised support and facilitation.
- Reading Plus: A digital platform designed to enhance reading skills.
- Paper-Based Learning Packs: Tangible resources that pupils can access independently.
Through these diverse methods, we strive to provide a holistic and inclusive educational experience that empowers our pupils to thrive, regardless of their medical needs.
