Intent
The Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Award presents a unique opportunity for pupils at River Tees Hospital School to engage in a structured and enriching programme tailored to their individual needs and circumstances. We have a thriving Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme and Hospital School is one of the few to be awarded the status of Licensed Organisations. All our Y10 pupils are encouraged to pursue the Bronze Award and all expeditions for the awards take place both locally and nationally. The curriculum intent for implementing the DofE Award in a hospital school context focuses on the following key areas:
Implementation
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is delivered through a flexible, inclusive programme that supports pupils’ physical, emotional, and social wellbeing while accommodating individual health needs. Activities are tailored to pupils’ abilities and interests, with adapted options for physical challenges, skills development, and volunteering that can be completed within a hospital or remote setting. Pupils are encouraged to set personal goals, build practical and employable skills, work collaboratively, and engage with their community, fostering resilience, confidence, teamwork, and a strong sense of achievement.
